Web Seminar #4
Building Youth Literacy in Mentoring Programs
Presenter: RANDI DOUGLAS, Program Advisor, Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory
Rändi supports literacy learning in school and afterschool programs, developing products and delivering teacher training in child and adolescent literacy, academic enrichment, and program development for the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Description: Mentors are not tutors, yet they are often asked to help their mentees do better in school. One way to incorporate academic success into mentoring is to focus on overall literacy rather than specific subject areas. This session will discuss the importance of literacy development in young people and describe specific activities and approaches that mentors and program staff can use to boost literacy skills.
